Pruning Techniques

Specific types of pruning may be necessary to maintain a mature tree in a healthy, safe and attractive condition.

Tree Pruning Techniques

  • Crown cleaning: Crown cleaning shall consist of the selective removal of one or more of the following items: dead, dying or diseased, weak branches and watersprouts (suckers).
  • Crown thinning: Crown thinning shall consist of the selective removal of branches to increase light penetration, air movement, and reduce weight.
  • Crown reduction: (not topping) Crown reduction decreases the height and or spread of the tree. Consideration should be given to the species (genus) of the tree sustaining this type of pruning, no more than 25% of the tree will be removed. The limbs reduced to laterals will be 1/3 their size to assure tree growth and minimize tree stress.
  • Crown restoration: Crown resortation pruning should improve the structure, form and appearance of the tree which has been severely(topped) vandalized or storm damaged.
  • Crown raising: Crown raising shall consist of the removal of the lower branches of a tree to provide clearance.
  • Vista pruning: Vista pruning is selectively thinning of framework limbs or specific areas of the crown to allow a view of an object from a pre-determinded point, or to trim to hide an object from a pre-determinded point.
